The Hawthorn Football Club is proud to have a major community partnership with Youthbeyondblue, as well as relationships with four other community organisations. These relationships form the Club’s community partners.

These partnerships aim to raise awareness and funds, as well as giving experiences for their members in any way that we can.

The Hawks encourage their members and fans to become familiar with these organisations that are a part of the Hawks family.

Major Community Partner


Youthbeyondblue

Hawthorn is proud to support Youthbeyondblue as the Club’s Major Community Partner. The partnership sees the Club take a strategic approach with beyondblue to help raise awareness of depression and anxiety in young people and to help reduce the stigma of these illnesses in society.

The Club will be involved in beyondblue events, which will include ADA Month (Awareness of Depression and Anxiety month – October), Movember and Men’s Health week, among others.

Indigenous Hip Hop Projects, a dance troupe who travel through Indigenous communities spreading Youthbeyondblue’s messages, will continue to be engaged when the Club visits Katherine as part of the AFL Club Partnership Program.

Youthbeyondblue’s messages of Look. Listen. Talk. Seek Help. are aimed at encouraging young people to talk about their problems and to seek help where required.

Community Partnerships


Odyssey House Victoria

 

For more than 30 years, Odyssey House Victoria has been helping people ‘kick the habit’ and overcome problems with alcohol and other drug addiction. 

As one of Australia’s leading drug and alcohol treatment, training and support organisations, Odyssey House provides opportunities for change and growth by reducing drug use, improving mental health and reconnecting people to their family and the community.

To prevent problems beginning, Odyssey House also works with several community schools and junior football and netball clubs across Victoria, helping young people gain the skills and knowledge to make more responsible and healthier choices. Odyssey House is now an official Community Partner of the Hawks.

Dr. Stefan Gruenert, CEO for Odyssey House said, “Odyssey House is very excited about becoming a community partner with the Hawthorn Football Club. We both value the health and wellbeing of young people, and are committed to strengthening families and the general community. With the support of the Hawks, Odyssey House hopes to raise greater awareness of drug and alcohol problems and encourage more people to become part of the solution.”

Over 20,000 people and their family members have benefited from Odyssey House’s residential rehabilitation and community based treatment programs, which help people reach their full potential and become meaningfully engaged in work, family and community life.

Drug and alcohol problems affect thousands of Australians each year and Odyssey House Victoria’s strong emphasis on families and the community makes them an ideal choice as a Hawk’s community partner.

The Rioli Fund for Aboriginal Health

 



The Rioli Fund for Aboriginal Health, has been established by Menzies School of Health Research to help raise awareness and funds for research into child health and mental health issues of Indigenous communities.

Menzies is the nation’s leader in Indigenous health research, discovering ways to reduce the impact of disease and improve the health and well being of Aboriginal Australians.

Menzies works in over 40 communities, and their research outcomes directly affect policy and more importantly people.  “What impressed me the most about Menzies is that they spend a great deal of time transferring the knowledge learned through their research into everyday practical solutions that impact directly on communities and people,” said Dean Rioli.

Speaking of the partnership between Hawthorn FC and the Rioli Fund, Mr Rioli said “I am extremely excited to be working with the Hawthorn Football Club, and in particular with the six Indigenous boys on their list.  I have met with the players and each of them has expressed their interest in supporting the fund and the work we are doing, as they too know of the appalling health situation faced by Indigenous Australians.”

Down Syndrome Victoria


Down Syndrome Victoria's mission is to benefit people with Down syndrome and their families by providing support, encouragement and information necessary to provide an optimum living environment.

The Hawthorn Football Club prides itself on being the family club and finds Down Syndrome Victoria to be a good fit in serving families in the community.

Down Syndrome Victoria also represents the needs of people with Down syndrome and their families to Government and the community in order to improve quality of life, preserve rights and advance the interests of people with Down syndrome thereby enhancing their status as citizens and enabling maximum independence and participation in the community.

The Beacon Foundation


The Beacon Foundation and the Hawthorn Football Club share a common passion - a desire for our young people to kick personal goals by making positive choices for their future.
A not for profit organisation, the Beacon Foundation works towards helping young people make positive career choices, assisting the school to work transition by supporting practical hands on programs in more than 100 schools across Australia, and calling on local business and industry to step up and lend a hand.

Working with students usually at year 10, Beacon tackles the issue of youth unemployment head on, providing students with positive experiences to guide them to further education, training or employment.
Work experience, industry site tours, mock interviews, buddy up and mentoring programs, work ready workshops and a symbolic, and often emotional , charter signing ceremony before peers, family  and community where students publicly pledge to stay on track are all cornerstones of the Beacon No Dole program.

Relying heavily on business and community support, and financial backing from corporate Australia, the Beacon Foundation is having huge success in building community engagement around schools, and assisting young people with their school to work transition. There are some wonderful stories to tell, and some impressive statistics to back the work Beacon has been doing.

“ Beacon believes young people should be responsible for their own future, but we firmly believe in the assist statistic –  young people need real jobs, dignity and self respect and we all have a role to play in providing that,” Beacon Chief Executive Scott Harris said.

The Beacon Foundation had its beginnings at Brooks High School in Tasmania 14 years ago, and with head office located in Tasmania, we share a cross Tasman bond with the Hawks, and have 10 schools in our Tasmanian program.

The links to the Hawthorn Football Club are strong, but Beacon’s work is also very strong in Victoria where almost 40 schools have joined the program, including many partner schools in the south east Melbourne corridor – no doubt there are more than a few Hawk supporters amongst the Beacon school numbers!

Beacon is always on the lookout for support and interest from city and regional business and industry wanting to help make a difference to the future of our young people – like the Hawks, we value time, passion and commitment.

AFL Schools


The Multicultural Schools Program is a partnership between the Australian Football League, AFL Victoria, Victorian Government and the Hawthorn Football Club. The program has been devised to develop opportunities to engage people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to broaden both the participation and supporter base in Australian Football.

Australian Football has the unique capacity to capture the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life. The Hawthorn Football Club will implement community programs amongst culturally and linguistically diverse communities such as Dandenong, Springvale, Noble Park and Oakleigh to engage them in Australian Football whether as players, umpires or fans of Hawthorn.

The program consists of six, one hour lessons. The lessons will include both skill development practical sessions and Hawthorn Football Club theory sessions. Also included in this is a workbook provided by the AFL with homework activities. Hawthorn players visit classes and engage in the students learning.

At the end of the program each student receives a participation certificate and has the opportunity to:

•    Attend a Hawthorn game
•    Tour the elite facilities of Waverley Park including the recently opened museum
•    Participate in a grid game at half time of a Hawthorn game at the MCG or Telstra Dome

Some of the Primary Schools part of this year’s program are Wooranna Park, St. Elizabeth’s (Dandenong), Spring Valley, St. Joseph’s, Heatherhill (Springvale), Wallarano, Yarraman Park (Noble Park), Oakleigh, South Oakleigh and Christ Our Holy Redeemer (Oakleigh).
