Tasmania became naming rights sponsor of the Hawthorn Football Club in 2006, but the relationship between the Hawks and the island state stretches back to 2001, when Hawthorn played its first AFL games on the island.
During this time Tasmania and Hawthorn have formed a strong and successful partnership, which brings numerous benefits to both partners. Today membership of the Hawthorn Football Club is at a record high, with Tasmanians representing a remarkable 14 per cent of the total Hawthorn membership. Tasmanians have truly embraced AFL games being played live in Tasmania and Hawthorn choosing Tasmania as its ‘second home’.
Tasmania’s relationship with the Hawthorn Football Club delivers significant benefits to the State’s local communities. Hawthorn has developed a prominent community profile in Tasmania through the AFL Community Camps program. The camps see Hawks players visit communities across the state, actively contributing to the efforts of local charities, community groups and football club fundraising activities. Thousands of Tasmanian children interact with the players during the week-long camps.
In July 2009 the Tasmanian Government and Hawthorn Football Club announced the Hawks in Schools program aimed at encouraging school kids to have fun being active. The Hawks in Schools program delivers a free sports pack to all 226 primary schools around Tasmania. Each sport pack contains an AFL football, netball, soccer ball, volleyball, basketball and a pump, with the potential to reach more than 56 000 Tasmanian primary school students
In addition to the sports packs and as part of the Tassie Hawks in Schools program, all grade four students in Tasmania will receive a Tassie Hawks in Schools booklet, developed by Hawthorn’s major partner MBF in conjunction with the Tasmanian Department of Education. The booklet is fun and engaging, full of interesting sports and health-related information for kids.
Tasmania has also grown its appeal as a visitor destination through the Hawthorn sponsorship. More than 20,000 AFL fans travel to Tasmania each year for Hawthorn home games at Aurora Stadium and many stay on to explore the rest of the state or plan to return later for a holiday. And according to economic impact research, Tasmania is getting a significant return on its investment. During the 2008 season $15.136 million was injected into the Tasmanian economy, consisting of $7.79 in direct expenditure from AFL fans visiting the state to attend Aurora Stadium matches. A total of 299 full time equivalent employment positions were created in Tasmania as a result of the Hawthorn sponsorship, with 197 of these a direct result of increased tourist visitation.
The benefits the partnership brings are plentiful. The economic advantage is clear, the community-based programs make a real difference, and Tasmanians get access to elite sportspeople in their own backyard. |
