Hawthorn has won its first Victorian Wheelchair Football League (VWFL) game in over 500 days, following a thrilling one-point win over St Kilda on Sunday afternoon at Boroondara Sports Complex.

The Hawks were slow out of the gates, being held to just one point in the first term while the Saints piled on 50.

In the second term, Yassin Hill came out firing with two goals in 20 seconds to breathe some life back into the Hawks.

He backed it up with another goal towards the end of the first half while Finn Broadbent, who scored five goals last round, also chipped in with a major.

However, it wasn't enough to reduce the quarter time deficit, with the Hawks going into the main break 49 points down.

It seemed as if a new-look Hawthorn outfit took to the court in the third quarter, with Hill again booting through the first two goals of the term, taking his tally to five.

Broadbent then chimed in with his second major before the two forwards traded goals again to go into the final term just 15 points down.

While the work of Hill and Broadbent did the most damage on the scoreboard, it was the defensive work of Mitchell Bond that proved pivotal throughout the game.

His dominance was highlighted particularly in the third quarter, as the Saints were kept to just two points for the term.

Once the whistle blew to mark the beginning of the fourth term, it was up to one man to finish off the job.

Hill again began the quarter with two crucial majors, taking his tally for the day to nine.

In line for his tenth goal in the dying seconds of the game, Hill unselfishly passed the ball to Broadbent, who sealed the winning major.

With 20 seconds to go, the Hawks found themselves leading for the first time in the game by just one point.

They were able to hold on until the final siren, completing a remarkable 49-point turnaround.

Hill ended the day with an astounding nine goals and was named best-on-ground while Broadbent finished the day with four, taking his season tally to nine.

The win now takes Hawthorn's record to one win and one loss from its two fixtures so far this season.

The Hawks now turn their attention to Essendon on Sunday, with the game commencing at 2pm at Boroondara Sports Complex.
