HAWTHORN star Jarryd Roughead received the maximum 10 votes in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award after his eight-goal in the 44-point win over West Coast on Saturday.

Last year’s Coleman Medallist booted five goals in the first half and three in the second to record his second-best ever goal-kicking performance at the elite level.

Roughead received the maximum fives votes from Brendon Bolton and Adam Simpson in a performance that showcased not only his goal-kicking prowess but also his ability to impact the game around the ground.

As well as booting eight goals, Roughead gathered 24 disposals, took eight marks (five of which were contested), laid six tackles, had five inside 50s and two goal assists.

It was the complete game from the forward, which garnered compliment from interim coach Brendon Bolton at his post-match press conference.

In fact, it wasn’t the bag of eight goals that got Roughead the plaudits, but rather the six tackles and ability to have an impact further up the ground.

“He’s kicked eight goals and also laid some really good tackles,” Bolton said.

“The mix of pressure and being able to score is really important for us.”

Captain Luke Hodge was the clear second-best on ground according to the coaches, earning four votes from each for a total of eight towards his AFLCA award tally.

The Hawks skipper had 28 disposals – the second-most of any Hawk on the ground – laid seven tackles, drove the Hawks inside 50 on seven occasions, had six clearances and kicked a goal in the victory at Aurora Stadium.

The returning Jordan Lewis picked up where he left off against Port Adelaide after missing the win over GWS last week with another 30-disposal effort that included seven marks, six clearances, five inside 50s and four tackles.

Lewis received six votes from the coaches.

In his first game back from injury, utility Matt Spangher played his best game for the Club and earned himself three votes in the process.

Playing in defence alongside Kyle Cheney and Angus Litherland, Spangher showed his ability to read the play off opposition boot, taking an equal game-high 10 marks – four of which were contested (the second-most of any player on the ground).

Spangher also had 22 disposals and created drive off half-back.

Midfielder Isaac Smith continued his good form after a four-goal haul against the Giants and was at his game-breaking best with 24 disposals and eight running bounces.

Smith also laid six tackles, had five inside 50s and could have impact the scoreboard more had it not been for inaccuracy in front of goal, finishing with 1.3.

Andrew Gaff (26 disposals and three goals) was the only Eagle to poll votes.
