HAWTHORN captain Luke Hodge has won the 2014 Norm Smith Medal, etching his name in VFL/AFL football as the game's third dual winner.

Hodge, who was presented with his medal by North Melbourne champion Glenn Archer, won the award in 2008 and again on Saturday in his 250th game.

The inspirational captain polled 10 votes to edge out teammates Jordan Lewis and Sam Mitchell, who each polled nine votes.

He is the second Hawk to win two Norm Smith medals, joining Hawthorn great Gary Ayres and Adelaide champion Andrew McLeod.

Hodge set the tone early for the Hawks on Saturday and finished with 35 possessions, 12 marks and two goals.

The 30-year-old was ruthless on Saturday, breaking the Swans' backs halfway through the second quarter with back-to-back goals.

The first was a regulation set shot from 15m out, but the second showcased his wisdom after 13 seasons - cutting off Gary Rohan's kick-in and coolly playing on to slot a goal that left the Hawks 47 points clear.

His fingerprints are all over the Hawks' back-to-back premierships, lifting the cup alongside coach Alastair Clarkson on both occasions and inspiring his teammates.

He went where he needed to on Saturday, spending time midfield, pushing forward when the opportunity presented and drifting back where he could control the game as he has done so often.
