Many consider the Friends of the Hawks Museum functions to be one of the best-kept secrets at Hawthorn. To sit and listen to inspirational former players reminisce about the highs and lows of their playing days is a really special treat for the lovers of the brown and gold.

This year’s function was held at the Pavilion at Box Hill on Sunday, November 15. It was impressive to see the 128 ‘Friends’ in attendance dressed in their favourite brown and gold club colours. The theme for the day was ‘Life after Football’ with the entertainment provided by special guests Andrew Collins, Russell Greene and Darrin Pritchard who played together in the 1988 Premiership.

Karl Jacklin commenced the day with an informative overview of the museum’s latest addition; the information tablet now available for visitors use as they walk through the museum. Friends of the Museum were told about the major project undertaken during 2015, the new club history titled Hawthorn – The Archives Collection.

Michael Derum the museum’s popular resident MC, led a discussion with Andrew Collins, Russell Greene and Darrin Pritchard reflecting on their star studded careers and the guidance given by their much loved and admired coach Allan Jeans, and where their life journeys have taken them since.

The audience sat riveted as they heard many stories from behind the scenes. All players revealed their individual experiences with their coach. When Darrin Pritchard revealed why the players knew him as ‘the legend’, he had the audience in fits of laughter yelling for more.

The raffle draw was another highlight with ongoing stories behind each of the prizes from the three players. The closed with the audience queuing to get autographs and photos taken with their heroes.

Thanks to Rachel Bradshaw, Jasminka Paic and Mike Warren for their assistance with this popular event, and to the volunteers, Karl Jacklin, Wendy-Grace Williams and Colin Newton for their efforts in selling the all-important raffle tickets and photography.
