HAWTHORN Football Club’s Matt Spangher has jumped on board the quest for equality in sport, proudly becoming an ambassador for not-for-profit organisation, Stand Up Events inaugural fundraising and awareness event, Move in May.
Stand Up Events, who challenge discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community in sport, have gained the support of numerous bigtime sporting names as they host a 4km or 8km walk or run around Melbourne’s Botanical Gardens Tan Track on Sunday 22 May, 2016.
When asked about the event, Spangher said he would be purchasing a ticket and giving the 8km run a crack.
“It is important people understand that buying a ticket aims to not only raise funds to support the activation of positive Stand Up Events, but also acts as an important visual representation of support behind the message that there is no place for discrimination against the LGBTIQ community in sport, or society in general,” he explained.
“It is something I am more than excited to be a part of, and I can’t wait to get out amongst some really great icons of Aussie sport and show my support,” he added.
Hawthorn’s ties to this cause run deeper than just a dedicated ambassador, with founder Angie Greene’s father and brother both valuable parts of Hawthorn history. Angie’s father, Russell Greene, is a three-time Hawthorn premiership player and member of the club’s Hall of Fame. Angie’s older brother Steven, joined the Hawthorn Football Club in 2000, playing a total of 42 games in the brown and gold.
Move in May is expected to attract more than 5000 participants. Tickets are available from Wednesday 17 February at www.standupevents.com.au
