1. Hawthorn’s first loss by more than 10 goals since…

There’s no getting around the final margin of Saturday night’s disappointing loss to the Giants.

It’s been a successful period for the club – with the Hawks' most recent loss by 10 goals or more back in mid-2012.

While the stats and key indicators were in the Giants favour, there’s plenty of time left in 2016 to turn things around.

And as Alastair Clarkson said on Saturday night, we're four and two. It's no time to panic.

2. Gunston on target

If there was one big positive to take out of the loss to the Giants, it was Jack Gunston’s performance.

The key forward finished with five straight majors, making the most of his opportunities up forward.

After four goals in his previous four games, Gunston’s haul will give him confidence going into Friday night’s big game against Richmond.

3. It starts in the middle

As Alastair Clarkson acknowledged after the game, the Hawks were soundly beaten in the middle of the ground.

Ben McEvoy and Jonathon Ceglar won the hit-out count (52-43), but most other key stats belonged to the Giants.

The hosts won the clearances (47-29), more possessions (413-314), contested possession (153-114) and even had more tackles (56-41) – with Hawthorn’s tackle count its lowest for the season.

4. Lovell shows promise on debut

It was a tough initiation for Tassie teenager Kieran Lovell, but he showed some promising signs – particularly in the first half.

Lovell picked up 10 of his 11 disposals in the first half – despite the Hawks trailing by 45 points at the major break.

5. Hawks have a habit of bouncing back

The last time the Hawks lost back-to-back games was in Round 9, 2014, which suggests the team knows how to respond after a loss.

Since then, the Hawks had lost just 10 of 47 games heading into Saturday’s match against the Giants – responding from each of those losses with a win.

It will be interesting to see what happens on Friday night against Richmond.
