Brisbane

There's some standout stats in the Lions' struggling season, with Josh Green among the league's best in score assists, but the fact they have three players in the upper echelon for spoils shows how under pressure the defence has been. Collingwood

Despite the Magpies' uninspiring season to date, only the Sydney Swans better their effort to have three players in the top 21 for average player ratings points – skipper Scott Pendlebury (No.3), Adam Treloar (19) and Steele Sidebottom (21). The importance of Ben Reid's fitness is highlighted by his No.2 ranking in average intercept marks, just behind West Coast marking specialist Jeremy McGovern. Essendon

Essendon has only won one game this year but it has had some wins in the players it has discovered and developed in trying situations. That comes through in the numbers, with half-back revelation Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti ranked No.8 in the AFL for running bounces and key defender Michael Hartley in the top 40 in the competition for intercept marks. The club’s struggles in attack are obvious, however, in the fact Zach Merrett, who has the highest average scoring chain involvements for the Bombers, ranks at a lowly 152 in the league.

He is No.1 at Fremantle for score assists and score involvements and No.2 in the AFL for player ratings points per game. It is no surprise that Stephen Hill is ranked so highly for metres gained, particularly given his move into defence this year. Nick Suban would surprise some as the most damaging kick inside 50m at the club. Lee Spurr has really stepped up as an intercept marker in the absence of Michael Johnson.

Sydney Swans

The Swans’ defence has stood strong so far in 2016 and their midfield is full of stars, but coach John Longmire might be searching for more run from his side in the second half of the season. Youngster Zak Jones is the team’s top-ranked player for running bounces per game, but he’s way down the list at number 72, and star forward Lance Franklin is the Swans’ leader for metres gained, and he’s only just scraped into the top 20.

Standout game
Veteran defender Ted Richards had a night out against West Coast in round five; taking a season-high eight intercept marks - Adam Curley

West Coast

What would you do with Jeremy McGovern? He is the No.1 intercept mark in the competition but he is also the seventh-best kick inside 50 in the AFL, hitting 67 per cent of targets. The Eagles can't afford to lose him down back but he could be so damaging forward of centre. Lewis Jetta is No.3 in the competition for kicking inside 50 but he's not getting enough of the ball to hold his place in the side let alone hurt the opposition. Part of the Eagles' issues against the best sides can be seen in the score involvements. All roads lead through Josh Kennedy. Opposition sides know if they can cut that supply chain they can strangle the Eagles.

Western Bulldogs

For a side that likes to springboard off half-back, it's no surprise running defenders Matthew Boyd and Shane Biggs gain the most ground for the Dogs. If Jake Stringer isn't kicking goals, the dynamic forward is helping set them up. While many believe Easton Wood is the best intercept mark in the AFL, stats tell us he's fifth best at the skill.

Metres gained

Standout game
For the team that struggles with efficiency around the goals, Koby Stevens has been missed in recent weeks. The injured midfielder knows how to hit a target, and in round five against the Brisbane Lions he was involved in 13 score involvements - six which resulted in a goal. - Ryan Davidson
