Development coach Chris Newman reviews every Hawthorn-listed player’s performance as Box Hill went down to Collingwood by 21 points on Saturday – ending their finals hopes in 2016.

JONATHAN O’ROURKE – 30 disposals, two tackles

“Had a great game for us with 30 touches including a shot on goal. He was really dynamic around the contest which is great. Jono finished with a couple of tackles and was really important for us within the contest with his hands. His ability to find space using his speed was a highlight also.” CN

KIERAN LOVELL – 27 disposals, seven marks

“Kieran was another standout player for us. Had 27 touches and a couple of shots on goal in the last quarter which he missed but it’s great he’s getting those chances to kick goals. Took seven marks, he has elite agility and the ability he has to break lines is really important for us.” CN

ANGUS LITHERLAND – 25 disposals, six tackles

“Had a great game – he was feeling a bit sick before the game but fought through it and finished with 25 possessions which had a good mix of kicks and handballs. His defensive stuff was outstanding; he had 30 pressure acts which is a huge number so it was a really complete game from Gus. With Teia Miles out (broken collarbone) he’s been able to generate some footy on half back for us.” CN

KADE STEWART – 20 disposals, eight tackles, one goal

“Quite high numbers for Kade this week with 20 touches and a goal. We were really pleased with how strong he was with his tackling – he had eight tackles on the weekend and really makes the most of every one of those. Hit the scoreboard which was great, his goal came at the start of the last quarter and sparked a mini comeback and he’s a player still learning his craft.” CN

TIM O’BRIEN – 15 disposals, ten marks, two goals

“T.O was great for us on the day. He’s been doing a lot of work on his marking on the track so it’s great that it’s paying dividends. Three shots at goal for two goals along with 15 disposals shows he’s a lively forward. Tim is quite dynamic with his movements – he can take a good contested mark and a great mark on the lead and continues to put his hand up for AFL selection.”

BLAKE HARDWICK – seven disposals, two goals

Not a high number of disposals for Blake this week but he kicked two goals straight so it was great he converted his chances. Had a pretty good last quarter and looked quite dangerous. This week against Casey is a chance for him to build on that game and hit the scoreboard again.”

DALLAS WILLSMORE – 16 touches, seven tackles

“Probably the highlight for the day for Dallas was his tackle numbers (seven). His pressure acts were also up around high teens so that’s great for him to be able to incorporate that into his game. His ball use is his strength and rarely wasted the ball so not a bad day for him.” CN

ZAC WEBSTER – 15 disposals, six tackles

“He’s a tough in-and-under player, Zac. Always finishes with high tackle numbers but it’s the way he competes in and around the contest which is outstanding. He spent a little bit of time on ball but played mostly across half forward which is important for us. Kicked two behinds but it was good to see him getting those shots.” CN

MARC PITTONET – 11 disposals, five marks

“He’s starting to make the most of his opportunities with regards to his contested marking for us. His centre bounce work was really good and gave us first use a lot of the time. Competed against Witts who was bigger, taller and stronger opponent but we thought ‘Pitto’ was good in the middle for us.” CN

RYAN SCHOENMAKERS – one goal

Had four shots at goal so it’s good he’s getting those chances. He had a couple of rushed opportunities in front of goal – one was touched off the boot so he was a bit stiff there and another one which was a snap which he didn’t quite nail. Looked quite lively up forward despite finishing with 1.3 for the afternoon.

MATT SPANGHER – nine disposals

“Was great to see him back out there after a long layoff. He looked quite sharp with his movement and he’s put a lot of work into his rehab, so his conditioning looks pretty good at this point. Had nine disposals but competed really well one-on-one, his leadership was important for us behind the ball. Had a couple of marks from opposition boot which was great and he was getting to the right spots.” CN

KURT HEATHERLEY – 13 disposals

“Another good game from Kurt. He didn’t have huge numbers in terms of disposals but he is a key defender, so the disposal count isn’t as important as his defensive acts, which were quite good on the day. He played on Cloke for the majority of the game and all-in-all he did a pretty good job on him. Had 19 pressure acts for the day which is great.” CN

JACK FITZPATRICK

“He was pretty lively on the day and looked like our best forward early on, getting a lot of opportunities on goal. Unfortunately, he couldn’t convert which was the only thing that let him down, kicking 0.5. So he’ll be doing a little bit of work on his goal kicking throughout week but the important thing is he’s getting to the right spots and tacking some great marks. He also played in the ruck and down back given Collingwood had some monsters playing forward, looking comfortable in those positions too.” CN
