The Hawthorn Next Generation Academy is a joint initiative between the AFL and the Hawthorn Football Club aimed at increasing the opportunities for young indigenous and multicultural athletes to learn about and play the game of Australian Rules Football. AFL clubs have been allocated areas through out Australia to implement the program and identify talent. The Hawthorn Football Club are very excited to be working in the Eastern Ranges zone (Vic), Gippsland Power zone (Vic) and Katherine (NT).

On Monday the Hawthorn Football Club, in conjunction with AFL Gippsland and the Gippsland Power launched the first event for the Hawthorn Next Generation Academy, a ‘Come and Try Day’ in Traralgon, Gippsland.

The day was a great success with over 250 participants enjoying a range of activities focused on football skills and athletic testing.

AFL Gippsland conducted a super clinic for students aged six to eleven years, with activities concentrating on introductive football skills and games.

Simultaneously, the Hawthorn Next Generation Academy held clinics for students aged between 11 and 15 years. Participants enjoyed activities including speed, agility and jump testing, as well as football skills and games.

The Hawthorn Next Generation Academy will be holding a ‘Come and Try’ day for the Eastern region on 21st of September in Rowville. Children between the ages of 11 and 15 residing in the Eastern Ranges talent region are elegible to register.

When: Wednesday, 21 September 2016

Time: Under 13s (Born 2003/2004): 9:30am – 12:00pm (registration from 9:15am)

Time: Under 15s (Born 2001/2002): 1:00pm – 3:30pm (registration from 12:45pm)

Age: Boys and Girls aged 11-15

Where: Rowville Sports Academy, Humphreys Way, Rowville VIC

Wear: Appropriate clothing/football training gear for indoor and outdoor sessions
. Runners compulsory (football boots optional)

Talented athletes from these ‘Come and Try’ days may potentially be invited to be a part of an eight-week training program aimed at improving participant’s athletic ability, technical football skills and football game sense.
