Hawthorn said goodbye to club champion Jordan Lewis today as he joined the Demons on a three-year contract.

While not an easy decision to make the Hawks could not guarantee Lewis a contract beyond 2017 and as such he decided to explore a trade to Melbourne.

Lewis spoke to melbournefc.com.au and paid tribute to the Hawks for their support over the last 12 years.

“I firstly want to start off by thanking the Hawthorn Football Club. I arrived there as an 18-year-old from Warrnambool and to leave the club as a four-time premiership player is something I am very proud of,” he said.

“I am truly grateful for everything that Hawthorn has done for myself and my family and I will never forget the memories of what we achieved together as a club.

“I want to thank every player, coach, staff member and supporter for everything they have done along the journey and I wish the club the very best in the future.

Speaking to media this afternoon Lewis declared that his relationship with Alastair Clarkson had not been tarnished.

“Clarko and I had a conversation … nothing could be guaranteed past next year. I personally think I can play for longer,” he said.

“Clarko and I are as good a friends now [as we've ever been] … he makes the tough calls and it’s not an easy position to be in.

“Hawthorn will always be in my heart … but it ends one chapter and opens another.”

As part of the deal Hawthorn received picks 48 and 66 in exchange for picks 57, 68 and Lewis.

Lewis joined the Hawks in 2004 as pick no. 7 and has since played 264 games.

He departs a four time premiership player (2008, 2013, 2014, 2015) and a best and fairest winner (2014).
