A model of consistency for a number of years now, Birchall continued to provide the Hawks with excellent ball use off half back in 2016.

The precise left-footer was instrumental in Hawthorn transitioning from defence to attack, regularly collecting 20+ disposals per game to finish with an average of just under 23 disposals per game this year.

His performances against the Gold Coast Suns in Round 14 which included 28 disposals, four rebound 50s and four inside 50s and a 24-disposal, one-goal game against North Melbourne in Round 21 were highlights.

Despite being a senior player at Hawthorn for a number of years, with Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis leaving the club during the trade period, Birchall will have the chance to develop his leadership further in 2017.

As the Hawks look to continue to cultivate their next crop of stars in the next couple of years, the 28-year old has a crucial role to play at Waverley.

A word from: Adem Yze

“Birch had one of his more consistent seasons, playing every game to average 23 possessions.

“His leadership down back was really strong and his run, carry and rebound from our backline was a feature of his game as it always is.

“I think the way he’s helped some of our younger defenders this year is something he’s been working on and something which stood out to the coaching staff out on the training track.

“That leadership has been a focus for him and it’s really starting to show out.

“Coupled with the fact that he’s playing at a really high level is something that we love about him and want him to continue.”
