We spoke to Hawthorn’s Elite Performance Manager Andrew Russell, to find out which of our Hawks have stepped up their game heading into the 2017 season.

Name: Taylor Duryea
Age: 25
Guernsey: 8
Senior games (2016): 23
Senior games (career): 86
Average disposals 2016: 15.9

Taylor Duryea enjoyed another consistent season in 2016, playing in 23 of the Hawks’ 24 games.

A regular staple in Hawthorn’s defensive line up, Duryea played several different roles; not only did he strengthen his ability to rebound off half back, but he also demonstrated a knack for shutting down damaging small forwards.

Duryea has been busy in the pre-season, working tirelessly at training to get his body in great shape for the 2017 season ahead.

His work hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Andrew Russell naming him as one of the biggest improvers over the course of the pre-season.

“He did an 11 second PB in his running time trial, and his training loads are the highest they’ve been since he came to the club,” said Russell.

“This is his most consistent preparation so far, and his ball work has been a lot more consistent as well.”

Duryea experienced arguably his best game of the season in Round 23 where he managed 22 disposals, including eight marks and four rebound 50s, and the small defender will be hoping to continue and build on this form in the season ahead.
