For many years now, Hawthorn has been widely known for having a plethora of left foot kickers.

Commonly associated with a high skill level, “lefties” have littered the Hawks list throughout an incredibly successful period for the club.

The offseason departures of Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis have undoubtedly made a small dint in this tally, along with the earlier losses of Lance Franklin and Matt Suckling.

But a closer look at the 2017 playing list will show that the number of left-footers is still strong, remaining one of the highest league-wide.

This year the Hawks list features eleven left-footers, a slight decrease on previous years but nevertheless rating equal second with the Swans, behind only St Kilda (13).

The current crop includes:

Tom Mitchell

Jarryd Roughead

Josh Gibson

Taylor Duryea

Grant Birchall

Luke Hodge

Isaac Smith

Dallas Willsmore

Ryan Schoenmakers

Cyril Rioli

Kade Stewart

Incredibly, this group boasts over 1500 games experience, 33 grand final appearances and 25 premiership medallions.

In the Hawks' last AFL appearance, seven of these players took to the field. Throw Roughead and Mitchell into the mix, and that means lefties could account for over 40% of Hawthorn's best 22 in 2017.
