125 games.

17 finals.

Three premierships.

There are few captains in the history of our game that have achieved more during their tenure than Luke Hodge.

Hodge took the reins from Sam Mitchell in 2010. The 27-year-old quickly found his way, leading the Hawks to a preliminary final berth in his first season as captain.

This was followed by a grand final appearance the following year, and grand final victories for the next three – forming Hawthorn’s illustrious three-peat era.

In fact, since his appointment, the Hawks have not missed a finals series.

He has led the team to 88 wins and 25 losses, generating a winning percentage of 77.9, a superb record in anyone’s books.

Aside from team success, Hodge has also experienced an abundance of personal success during his time as captain. He was awarded the Norm Smith Medal for his performance in the 2014 grand final, to go with his matching medallion from 2008. He was also voted best captain by the AFL Player's Association that same year.

While the three-time All Australian is not planning on hanging up the boots just yet, he believed the time was right to hand the reins to his successor, Jarryd Roughead.

“I’ve always thought I’d like to be around to help out and support my successor so I’m rapt that Rough’s appointment means I’ll have the opportunity to do that,” said Hodge.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to captain the Hawthorn Football Club.”

Adored by fans, respected by teammates; there is no doubt Luke Hodge will go down as one of the most successful captains of our game.
