Luke Hodge looks set to return to the senior line-up this week after completing his one-week club-imposed suspension, following an impressive outing for Box Hill on Saturday.

Playing predominantly through the midfield, Hodge helped the Hawks overcome the Essendon VFL side by four points at Tullamarine.

Entering his tenth year, Brendan Whitecross was the player to receive the most plaudits from coach Chris Newman for his efforts in the midfield as well as the leadership he provided.

"'Whitey' is a bigger body and his attack on the footy was outstanding. With his voice, he's a bit of a leader," Newman told AFL.com.au.

"He's an experienced AFL player, so you can go into a game assured that you're going to get 100 per cent effort from 'Whitey'.

Whitecross, who has played 97 games over his nine seasons at the Hawks, will be determined to return to the senior line-up soon as he eyes off his 100th game milestone.

Teia Miles, who could have considered himself unlucky for missing senior selection after a strong JLT Series, was a level above in the Box Hill backline and will be hopeful his luck improves heading into the Adelaide clash.

Fellow pre-season stand-out Kade Stewart sat out the game as the carry-over emergency for the AFL game on Saturday night, and is certain to be on the selection table.

Promising pair Ryan Burton (three goals) and Kaiden Brand, who endured an injury-interrupted pre-season, also put their hands up for senior selection with solid VFL performances.
