The Rundown

The Hawks were able to capitalise early, taking an 18-point lead into the first break, as the Saints started the game with multiple costly turnovers.

But in the second term the Saints were able to rectify these errors and steady the scoreboard back into their favour with Nick Riewoldt flourishing in his new role on the wing.

The Hawks were unable to pull away from the Saints, as the youthful enthusiasm of the Saints became a factor in the scores being even at the final change.

But the Hawks were able to grind away at the Saints, and record their second consecutive three point win.

The Star

Sam Mitchell recorded a career personal best as he amassed 44 disposals, which included 20 contested possessions and 10 centre clearances. With 31 of his possessions being handballs, it was clear that Mitchell was forced to win a lot of his ball within the contest.

The Moment

A defining moment of this game, and a matter of controversy at the time, came in the fourth quarter when St Kilda’s Sean Dempster, having received the kick-in, was called to play on. He rushed his kick and put teammate, and former Hawk, Shane Savage under immense pressure, especially considering Paul Puopolo was in the vicinity. Puopolo tackled and Jordan Lewis pounced on the loose ball to snap an important goal around his body.

The Coach

“It showed a fair amount of grit to go two goals down and get ourselves back in the contest. That’s the sign of a proud group and when the chips are down they find a way but probably two weeks in a row the better side has lost.”- Alastair Clarkson
