Coming off a big loss to Port Adelaide, Hawthorn may look to make some changes as they head into a must-win match against Gold Coast.

Hawks supporters can feel encouraged by the continued form of the VFL side, who this week drew level with flag favourites Port Melbourne to hold onto top spot on the ladder.

Omitted from the AFL side after Round 9’s loss, Will Langford was pivotal on Saturday in keeping Box Hill within striking distance, posting a 30 disposal (20 contested), three goal and six tackle performance. The Hawks may look to recall the midfielder to provide some added inside grunt.

Young Hawk Kade Stewart also played his part for Box Hill, finishing with 25 disposals and six clearances, and providing a work rate that Coach Chris Newman described as “outstanding”. Since an impressive JLT series, the crafty mid has only been seen at AFL level once (Hawthorn’s Round 2 loss) despite consistent VFL showings. The youngster may finally get another opportunity this week if Hawks opt for youthful pace against a quick Gold Coast outfit.

Tim O’Brien showed flashes of brilliance earlier in the season, kicking eight goals in four matches before being sidelined due to a hip injury prior to Round 10. The forward didn’t miss a beat upon returning to the VFL this week, booting three goals in a dynamic performance, and is a prime candidate for an AFL recall.
