Trade talk: "A numbers game"

Wright's trade update Day 1 Graham Wright will join HawksTV over the Trade period for regular updates on the NAB AFL Trade Period.

The future of Hawthorn youngsters Billy Hartung and Kurt Heatherley is up in the air, with both players uncontracted heading into 2018.

Speaking on NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday afternoon, List and Recruiting Manager Graham Wright confirmed the club was keeping its options open.

“Billy’s out of contract this year, which everybody knows,” said Wright.

“At this stage we haven’t offered him anything.

“We were open minded as we went into this trade period, and obviously Billy and his manager know that, and we wanted to see where the week went for us.

“What that means for him, we’ll [know] when we get towards the end of the trade week.

“From our perspective we’re in a situation where we’re probably going to wait, and see where we sit next week.”

After four years on Hawthorn’s list, New Zealand-born Heatherley’s playing future is also unclear.

“[Heatherley’s situation] is a little bit similar to Billy really,” said Wright.

“Along with Kade Stewart and Jonathan O’Rourke, they’re the players we’ve got out of contract and we’ve been really upfront and honest with all those guys, [saying] that we’d get through the trade period and then make some decisions.

“Like all clubs, we’ve got to have 38-40 players on our list, we’ve got a couple of retirements and we’ve got to have three picks at the draft.

“So from that perspective, it’s not easy for those players, but it does become a numbers game.”

Earlier today, Wright also confirmed the club is keen to enlist the services of Victorian-born Port speedster Jarman Impey, who has nominated Hawthorn as his preferred destination.
