In the days leading up to the 2017 NAB AFL Draft, we'll be counting down Hawthorn's top 10 draft classes from the last 30 years, with one class revealed each day...
Grant Birchall headlines the 2005 draft class in which Hawthorn had five picks inside the top 22.
Birchall has played 245 games for the Hawks, which have included four premierships and an All Australian year in 2012. This year the Tasmanian is set to become just the 15th player in club history to play 250 games in a brown and gold jumper (a feat that would have come in 2017, if not for an unlucky run of injury).
Fellow premiership players Xavier Ellis (Pick 3) and Max Bailey (Pick 18) were also drafted in 2005. The pair both experienced injury-interrupted careers but were still able to get themselves a taste of the ultimate success, Ellis in 2008 and Bailey in 2013.
Ellis played 86 games for the Hawks before moving west to play for the Eagles for three years, while Bailey played 43 games over his eight years as a Hawk. His influence is still felt around the club, with Bailey signing on as a development coach at the end of 2016.
Rounding out those five picks are two 'Beaus' - Dowler (Pick 6) and Muston (Pick 22). Dowler played 16 games over a four-year career at Hawthorn. While Muston, who suffered three knee reconstructions before the age of 22, managed 13 games from his five seasons in the system.
The Hawks also claimed Travis Tuck under the father/son rule with pick 38. The son of club Legend Michael Tuck, Travis played 20 games for the club between 2006 and 2009.
The Rookie Draft also featured some quality for the Hawks, taking Stephen Gilham (Pick 34) and Ben McGlynn (Pick 55) in the secondary draft.
A 2008 premiership player, Gilham played 98 games for the Hawks while McGlynn played 44 games for the club before moving to Sydney, where he added a further 127 before hanging up the boots at the end of 2016.
