IT’S a new year and we’re pretty excited about the challenges that lie ahead for the team in 2016.

There’s sure to be plenty of talented young Hawks vying for senior berths over the next couple of months of pre-season training and NAB Challenge matches.

We’ve taken a look at 10 second-to-sixth year players who will be hoping they can push their names into the frame for regular senior selection this year.

Name: Daniel Howe
Age: 20
Guernsey: 41
Height: 191 cm
Weight:
83 kg
Games (2015): 4
Games (career): 4
Drafted: Pick no. 31, 2014 NAB AFL Draft

After cracking into the senior side for four AFL games in 2015, Daniel Howe will be hoping to continue his improvement in 2016.

According to the 2015 AFL Season Guide

A mobile defender the Hawks believe has the goods to become a tall midfielder down the track.

He was attractive to the club (at the Draft) because of his outstanding courage, strong overhead marking and great vision while playing in the TAC Cup and he also tested well for kicking skills during the Draft Combine.

In 2015…

Howe managed to break through for four games in an impressive debut season for the reigning premiers, that included a 21-disposal performance against Carlton in Round 23.

He was recognised for his efforts too, taking out the Best First Year Player award for both the Hawks and Box Hill.

At the end of the year, Howe extended his contract by two years, until the end of 2018.

Where would he slot in?

Playing as a mid-sized defender capable of rotating through the midfield, Howe will be hoping to break through for more appearances in 2016.

The departure of Matt Suckling opens up one spot in the best 22, which is set to be hotly contested for the entirety of the 2016 season.

Howe looked at home at AFL level last season and could be pushing a number of more senior players for regular selection.

Pre-season update…

Howe has been back at pre-season training since day one, with the club’s first to fourth year players.
