Richmond's VFL side were too strong for the Box Hill Hawks on Saturday as the Tigers proved victorious by 47 points.

Despite Box Hill holding a three-point half-time lead, the Tigers ran over the Hawks in a second half that saw them kick nine goals to the Hawks’ one.

VFL Coach Chris Newman reviews the performance of each AFL-listed player’s game below.

James Cousins

26 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles, 1 goal

“Cousins played on-ball for the bulk of the game. He was pretty active with his pressuring of the opposition with his six tackles. His tackling average has been pretty solid throughout the year, that’s something that he is starting to pride himself on. He hurt himself a bit in the third quarter. He was able to push through the game but he was a little bit on one leg.” CN

Brendan Whitecross

25 disposals, 8 marks, 1 tackle

“Whitecross played on the wing and then half-back in the second half. He has played all lines again, it doesn’t really matter where he is playing week-to-week. He was effective for us on the wing and also pretty solid down back. He provided a fair bit of run for us in both positions and used the footy pretty well given Richmond’s pressure.” CN

Kieran Lovell

22 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles

“He was an on-ball rotation but he started forward. It’s good that he is impacting games, although not really reaching his peak just yet. But he is playing his role for us and he has been pretty solid for us in terms of his output, disposal-wise. We’d love to get him to hit the scoreboard a bit more when he is forward. That is a craft he will have to work on.” CN

James Worpel

20 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 2 goals

“He wasn’t our highest disposal-getter but he was probably the most damaging. He had a really good second quarter where he was getting clean ball from Pitto and he was just running it out of the centre bounce. He had eight clearances and seven inside 50s, so that is an effective game for a mid, who also spent a bit of time forward. We were very happy with his output playing against some experienced mids. He also kicked two goals which is a good result.” CN

Kaiden Brand

18 disposals, 7 marks, 1 tackle

“He took a few marks from opposition boot and also had 10 rebound 50s. Quite often he was using his legs and his speed to get out of trouble, which is what we want from Brandy. That’s his point of difference as a tall, he is quite quick for a big guy so we want to get him running and carrying a bit more and playing with more freedom.” CN

Kurt Heatherley

18 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles

“Kurt Heatherley played key back for us. He and Brandy shared the responsibilities on Callum Moore. He took a couple of marks from the opposition’s boot. But his tackling was probably the real highlight of the game, he had a couple of crunching tackles. He is playing with some real aggression, so we want to keep him at that level.” CN

Teia Miles

17 disposals, 1 mark

“It was a pretty effective, offensive game from Teia. He was playing half-back and then we threw him onto the half-forward line in the last quarter. I still think he is capable of being a forward as well, so whether that is something we look to down the track, at least we have the flexibility to do that. When he has ball in hand, he just tucks the ball under his wing and takes the opposition on. He is pretty hard to tackle so we encourage him to get his handball receives up so that he can set us up.” CN

David Mirra

17 disposals, 8 marks

“David Mirra took six marks from the opposition’s boot. There was some pretty good pressure from the mids which enabled him to do that, but he just reads the ball so well. His ball-use was solid throughout the day as well. He is another one that provided some strong rebound, with seven rebound 50s himself. He is a competitor and competed hard all day.” CN

Harrison Jones

16 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles

“Harry wants to be an on-baller so we thought it would be good if he played on Anthony Miles, who is one of the best midfielders in the competition at the moment. They had a really good battle. Harry learnt a lot from playing on Miles. He really held his own, getting a bit of the ball himself. He cramped late, which he has had an issue with across the year. The workrate of Miles may have taken its toll on him.” CN

Dallas Willsmore

16 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles

“He played half-forward and wing. He was almost there. He had a couple of opportunities to kick goals, which he couldn’t quite nail. So, he is getting in some good positions to set us up and generate goals.” CN

Jackson Ross

14 disposals, 9 marks

“Ross is really starting to find the footy and impact in front of goals. He was struggling earlier on to have the impact that he wanted, but he is starting to be really influential. He missed three goals on the weekend playing half-forward for us.” CN

Ryan Schoenmakers

13 disposals, 8 marks, 1 tackle, 1 goal

“Schoenmakers was a little bit the same, finishing with 1.2. He is one of the most selfless players that you could play with. He continually just blocks for others to get to the right position. He competes his bum off. I think he is on the verge of having a break-out game, so we’re hoping that’s this week.” CN

Dylan Moore

12 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 1 goal

“Dylan played on the wing. It is still going to take a bit of time, I think, coming back from that injury. He held his width really well throughout the day and he kicked 1.2. It is good that he is getting some scoring opportunities as a winger.” CN

Marc Pittonet

12 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 39 hit-outs

“He competed really well all day and probably won the hit-out battle. Mitch Lewis couldn’t really ruck so Pittonet shouldered a lot of the load himself. He took a couple of contested marks, which is what we like to see. Four tackles is also pretty good for a big man.” CN

Oliver Hanrahan

8 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles

“Hanrahan didn’t have a heap of impact throughout the day, but he worked pretty hard and ran some good patterns. He missed an opportunity at goal, playing half-forward.” CN

Changkuoth Jiath

5 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles

“Jiath played his first game back in a while. He only played half a game so it will take a bit of time for him to get back to full match fitness but hopefully he has pulled up well and he can make another progression this week.” CN

Mitchell Lewis

5 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle

“He hurt himself in the second quarter. But he battled on manfully on one leg.” CN

Conor Nash

5 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles

“He just throws himself at everything and works really hard. None of our talls had a lot of opportunity to have shots on goal, we only kicked six for the day. He had a shot in the third quarter, which he would nail ordinarily but he missed that one. He can impact a lot more than that.” CN
