Sitting comfortably inside the top four, the Hawks took an unchanged line-up down to their second home in Launceston as they came up against a ninth-placed Lions side looking to work their way into the top eight.

The club was also preparing to celebrate the 300th game of club champion Shane Crawford, who would become just the sixth Hawk to reach the milestone.

QT: Spearhead Lance Franklin got the Hawks on the board as he kicked truly from a set shot midway through the term in what was an arm-wrestle of a quarter.

Meanwhile Lions co-captain Jonathan Brown scored just the second goal of the game late in the quarter, with the Hawks taking a slim one-point margin into the first break.

HT: The low-scoring encounter continued as both sides positioned plenty of numbers behind the ball.

Luke Hodge was proving formidable down back as the spare man, picking off the Lions’ forward entries, while skipper Sam Mitchell was also racking up possessions through the middle of the ground.

Livewire forward Cyril Rioli finally broke the deadlock in the 18th minute as he scored the term’s first goal, with teammate Franklin slotting a second moments later, stretching the Hawks’ lead to 14 points.

3QT: With both sides’ forward pillars struggling to get clean use of the ball, it again took until the latter stages of the quarter before a goal from either side would come, with Cameron Stokes bobbing up to add his first.

The game seemed to open up, however, as Franklin crumbled a loose ball before snapping a tight goal, before Rioli pulled down an impressive grab inside 50 with just one hand before kicking truly.

An impressive defensive display by the Hawks saw Brisbane held goalless for close to two quarters, with Lion Jared Brennan finally putting one on the board, with the difference sitting at 31 points.

FT: Justin Sherman looked to have the Lions back in the hunt as he reduced the margin to 26 points, but it was the Hawks who quickly hit back, again via goals to Franklin and Rioli.

Key Lions forward Daniel Bradshaw nailed two goals in a matter of minutes, but it would be as close as the side would get, as the Hawks opened the flood gates to pile on seven straight goals in the latter stages of the term.

Jordan Lewis sent one through on the run from long range before a dominant Franklin had two more – one from right on 50 after wheeling on to his left foot, the other from tight in the pocket after fending off a pair of tacklers.

The game all but over, the Hawks ensured that milestone man Crawford would cap off a brilliant 28-disposal performance with the game’s final goal, kicking truly from directly in front, as the September-ready Hawks finished 69-point victors.
