Hawthorn’s inaugural VFLW side has received a huge boost ahead of the 2018 season, with star midfielder Mel Kuys re-signing with the club.

Fresh off a second successful AFLW season with Collingwood, Kuys averaged 9.3 disposals and 2.7 marks over seven games while splitting her time across the forward line and through the midfield.

In this year’s AFLW off-season, Kuys is set to return to the side she captained in 2017 – thought this time she will be playing under the Hawthorn banner.

“We all know what Hawthorn means, so just coming in here, training and being looked after that little bit more [than when we were known as Box Hill]… makes a big difference.”

“It was a hard decision [to come to Hawthorn], obviously with Collingwood being in the VFLW this year as well,” Kuys said.

“But I just thought this was the right decision for myself.”

Kuys enjoyed a stellar campaign with the Box Hill Hawks last season, finishing runner-up in the club’s best and fairest and named on the interchange bench in the VFLW Team of the Year.

Renowned for both her run-and-carry and excellent kicking skills, the 30-year-old will join a host of fellow AFLW players in Hawthorn’s first-ever women’s side with the likes of Rebecca Beeson, Sarah Perkins, Pepa Randall and Phoebe McWilliams all set to pull on the brown and gold in 2018.

The Hawks are set to kick off their campaign against Essendon on the 6th of May at Windy Hill.
