Moncrieff marks on the lead

A long kick inside 50 from Hawk Robert DiPierdomenico hit full forward Michael Moncrieff square on the chest in the opening seconds of the game, as he came streaming out from full forward. Moncrieff went back and kicked truly to give the Hawks the perfect start, before doing almost precisely the same thing again a minute later after Alan Martello hacked the ball forward. Moncrieff would kick a third later in the quarter as the Hawks took a 19-point lead into the first change.

Matthews spins his way to a goal

After North Melbourne extended their halftime lead early in the third term, the Hawks hit back via Alan Martello, but it was a superb effort from Leigh Matthews that stole the lead back and handed the Hawks the momentum. Matthews gathered the ball only metres from the goal line after Don Scott knocked the ball down from a boundary throw-in, before side-stepping around Kangaroo defender Ross Glendinning and spinning around another to snap a left-foot goal. Matthew’s efforts wouldn’t stop there however, kicking the next goal (his third) after marking deep in the forward line, as the Hawks piled on seven for the term.

Knights shifts forward

Concussed in a heavy collision during the final term, star Hawk Peter Knights was swung forward with incredible effect.  The move saw the defender haul in a number of flying marks, with the best of them taken high over the top of North Melbourne Captain Keith Greig, and kick two goals for the term as the Hawks held off the Kangaroos to win their fourth premiership by 18 points.
