The Box Hill Hawks find themselves back in the top four of the VFL ladder after a resounding 43-point win over Port Melbourne at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.

The Hawks were too strong for the reigning premiers and the margin could have easily been extended had Chris Newman’s side been more accurate in front of goal, converting just 15 of their 35 scoring shots.

Newman reviews the performance of each AFL-listed player below.

James Worpel

34 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal

“He was a stand-out throughout the day and this was easily his best game so far. It was a pretty balanced game. His clearance work (eight clearances) was really good. He had pretty good chemistry with the ruckman and he was getting fed pretty well. He was getting the ball with momentum and using his fend, which is a real strength of his. He’s a mature body for a kid, and he uses it quite well. He played the bulk on-ball, where we’re trying to give him more exposure.” CN

Harry Jones

26 disposals, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal

“Harry Jones probably had his break-out game too. He had a really balanced game. He didn’t get beaten in the contest. He has started adding marking the ball from opposition boot to his game, he took four on the weekend. His hands are clean and strong at the moment. He is playing on instinct, which is good to see.” CN

Dylan Moore

26 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 1 goal

“He ended up with 26 disposals but actually had a really quiet first half. He had five touches to half time. We got what we wanted out of him on the wing. His main asset is his ability to run and follow-up. He created some one-twos, some handball receives and then get the ball inside 50. He had five inside 50s as a winger which is what we want. He is starting to understand the role better.” CN

David Mirra

22 disposals, 9 marks, 1 tackle

“Really strong offensive game, with 95% disposal efficiency. He had five marks from the opposition’s boot including four in the last quarter. He repelled a lot of their attacks so it was a good game from him.” CN

Ryan Schoenmakers

21 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 2 goals

“Schoey is getting four or five shots at goal each game so he is getting himself in some really good positions. He took three contested marks for us and he just continues to play his selfless game. He was our second ruck too, where his follow-up work was quite good.” CN

James Cousins

20 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles

“Not his greatest game coming back after a week off. His clearance work was pretty strong and he worked pretty well with the midfield.” CN

Kaiden Brand

17 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles

“He had a difficult match-up on the weekend, with the resting ruckman. He competed when he had to compete. He had quite a few strong spoils as well as his ability to make up distance on the lead is good. He uses that asset well. For a key back, having 17 disposals is a real bonus.” CN

Conor Nash

16 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles

“Similar to Moorey on the other wing, he had a quiet first half. But he lifted too in the second half. What we like about his disposals is that he is starting to be a bit more attacking with ball in hand. His ability to run and carry, as well as his running without the ball, is starting to really impress. A couple of good games from Nashy in a row.” CN

Mitchell Lewis

15 disposals, 10 marks, 2 tackles, 3 goals

“He has again finished with three goals and four of his 10 marks were contested. For a young kid, he really does help with his leadership in setting up the forwards. He was really important for us and he seems to pop up at the right times. His goal kicking is pretty accurate at the moment as well.” CN

Dallas Willsmore

15 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal

“15 disposals for a high half-forward is pretty good. He used the ball really well so we want the ball in his hands as much as possible.” CN

Conor Glass

11 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle

“Conor Glass played half-back. Not a heap of disposals but, again, it was what he did with his disposals that we loved. When he tucks the ball under his arm, that’s when he is at his best. So, we’d like to get the ball in his hands a bit more as well.” CN

Jackson Ross

10 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 2 goals

“Ross used his body quite well for a smaller frame, being able to read the ball and push his opposition under the ball. We’re happy with Rossy at the moment because he is hitting the scoreboard. He is not getting a heap of the ball but is consistently finding himself hitting the scoreboard.” CN

Kurt Heatherley

8 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles

“Kurt played on Jordan Lisle and kept him to two goals. He competed pretty well.” CN

Changkuoth Jiath

6 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles

“He played a bit of wing late after having a really good start to the game. I think we sometimes forget with these guys’ development that they will have fade-outs throughout games. He is a really hard, good runner so he will start to get a bit more reward towards the back end of the year.” CN

Kieran Lovell

6 disposals, 1 mark

“Lovell got injured just before half-time. We thought he was pretty good early in the game but he had an ankle injury in the second quarter. He tried to come back on but he just couldn’t run.” CN
