With its win over Melbourne University on the weekend, Hawthorn's VFLW side has cemented top spot on the ladder.

The Hawks sit a half-game clear of the second-placed Collingwood, having lost just one of their first nine games this year.

After finished third last in 2017 with just three wins against their name, Coach Patrick Hill has led this side to an incredible resurgence this season.

Hill led a massive off-season recruiting drive which saw the Hawks pick up AFLW talent with the likes of Meg Hutchins, Sarah Perkins and Rebecca Beeson joining the ranks.

The Hawks’ only loss so far this year came in Round 5, when they fell seven points short of Collingwood at Box Hill City Oval.

One of the key aspects of Hawthorn’s strength this year has been their stingy defence.

The Hawks are conceding the least points per game, allowing just an average 21.9 points through their nine games.

Compare this to the last season when the Hawks were being scored against at a rate of 51.3 points per game.

This defensive improvement speaks to Coach Hill’s ability to continually improve the list’s learning of the game.

The Hawks have a bye this weekend before taking on the final five games of their home and away fixture, as they look to secure a top two spot and double chance in finals.
