Next Generation Academy product Tony Olango will finally get his AFL shot, after being picked up by West Coast in Monday night’s Rookie Draft.

The Sudanese-born ruckman joined Hawthorn’s Katherine-based academy at the start of 2017, following a rule tweak that allowed clubs to nominate multicultural players living in Darwin.

Despite the Hawks choosing not to nominate Olango during this year’s draft period, NGA Head Coach Nathan Foley says the 200cm talent thoroughly deserves his chance.

“We’re really happy for Tony,” said Foley.

“He’s a great kid who’s worked really hard throughout his time at Hawthorn’s Next Generation Academy.

“He’s an incredible athlete, and he deserves his shot at an AFL career.

“We wish him all the best.”

Hawthorn selected an NGA prospect of their own ahead of Monday’s Rookie Draft, with Changkuoth Jiath signing with the club as a Category B Rookie.
