Affectionately known as ‘Kiwi’ due to his New Zealand background, Heatherley continued to make big strides in his development in 2016, culminating in an AFL debut late in the home-and-away season.

Known for his ability to pressure the opposition and intercept abilities, Heatherley impressed at VFL level and was a late inclusion for Hawthorn’s Round 20 clash against Melbourne.

Collecting 11 disposals, six marks and five rebound 50s, his ability to guard a quality opposition forward and poise with ball in hand was obvious.

After being elevated from the rookie list at the end of last season, the rangy defender’s expectations would fully turn to playing more football at AFL level in 2017 with another pre-season in the bank.

A word from: Adem Yze

“It was really exciting for Kurt to get his first game this year, particularly as the first New Zealand-born player to play at AFL level.

“When he did play (against Melbourne in Round 20) he slotted in nicely and handled different situations really well.

“His form down at Box Hill was really strong and consistent, continuing to throw his name up to play senior footy.

“We were really happy he got a taste at AFL level this year and hopefully that drives his pre-season going into 2017.”
