The Changes

Hawthorn

In: Spangher. Out: Brand.

Brisbane Lions

In: Cutler. Out: Evans.

The Form

The Brisbane Lions have really struggled over the last three weeks, with big losses to Port Adelaide, Collingwood and Melbourne compounding some injuries to key players.

Dayne Beams looks set to miss the rest of the season with tendonitis in his knee, while Tom Rockliff has also missed a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury – however he may be a chance to return this week.

The Lions have blooded plenty of youngsters so far this season, with Josh Schache, Rhys Mathieson and Ben Keays among them.

The Hawks wasted their chances in front of goal last week, which cost them dearly as the Swans converted theirs at the other end of the ground.

What would have heartened Hawthorn fans is the clear effort that the players were able to produce after a tough week off the field.

Jack Gunston was an absolute standout in a losing cause last week, collecting 18 disposals, 11 marks and four goals as he worked tirelessly to keep the Hawks in the game.

The Hawks will be looking for more significant contributions in the midfield and up forward this week and rebound after a loss to the Swans.

Stats That Matter

The Hawks were again swamped in the contested ball department, registering 29 less contested possessions than the Swans last week. Coach Alastair Clarkson insists it’s not a big issue, but the Hawks will no doubt be looking to improve in that department this week.

Key Player

Jordan Lewis will skipper the Hawthorn side in his 250th game this week and continue what is a very decorated career. The Hawks need a lift from their midfield and Lewis will need to play a key part in that.

It’s A Big Week For…

Josh Gibson was relatively quiet last week, collecting just 14 disposals last week. With the addition of key defender Kaiden Brand to the side in recent weeks, the Hawks will now look to free up Gibson in the back line as much as possible.

Odd Fact

The Hawks have only conceded one loss to the Lions since 2007, winning nine of the last 10 encounters between both sides.

Final Thoughts

The Hawks would have been disappointed with last week’s performance, and will be looking to bounce back really strongly against the Lions at the Gabba.
