Hawthorn Football Club’s Katherine affiliate, the Big River Hawks have won the 2013 NTFL Under 18s Premiership.

Each week, the team travels more than 650 kilometres to Darwin to compete in the competition, having only two home games in Katherine a year.

This mattered little to the courageous team, however, who defeated favourites Southern District Crocs by 9 points to take home the silverware.

On each of the Flying Squad Visits to Katherine, Hawthorn Football Club players and coaches attend a training session with the Big River Hawks, sharing tips and skills with the team.

During the February trip this year, Assistant Coach Brett Ratten remained in Darwin for a few extra days, taking it upon himself to attend a Big River Hawks game, offering words of wisdom and encouragement to the team who won the ultimate prize this weekend.
