IN THE aftermath of Hawthorn's 62-point loss to Richmond, midfielder Brad Sewell conceded the Hawks were "shown up in all areas" of the game and they desperately needed injured skipper Luke Hodge to return.

"We were comprehensively beaten across the field," he said in the deathly silent rooms following Saturday's game at the MCG.

Sewell said the Hawks had their chances to get back into the game after Richmond's bright start, but failed to convert their opportunities. And they had no answers once the Tigers turned the screw late in the third term.

"Our application and our effort wasn't at all consistent [against Richmond]," he said. "We didn't have too many winners and we were shown up in all areas of the game."

The Hawks have lost three games this year - Geelong, West Coast and Sydney Swans - that have been played in wet and greasy conditions. However, Sewell said that the Hawks were always prepared for such weather given the often bleak conditions at their Waverley training base.

"I'd be very surprised if that was the case. There would be very few sides that train in the conditions we do out at Waverley and we have some exceptional inside mids. For some reason today, we didn't bring it."

But he did admit the Hawks were missing their skipper, Hodge, who has played just two games this year because of first a calf and now a knee injury.

"Yeah, we are. You can't replace a bloke like Luke Hodge on several fronts. Not just his leadership and his grunt but also the way he plays the game.

"To have him on the sidelines is disappointing but he has to get his body right," he said.
