Gunston is coming off his finest season. In the absence of Jarryd Roughead, he became Hawthorn’s No. 1 key forward and repaid the faith with 51 goals and excellent leadership despite usually being stood by the opposition’s best defender. Like Roughead, he also enjoyed occasional bursts through the midfield and was also deployed late in quarters as an extra defender. The recruitment of Ty Vickery, the return to full fitness of Ryan Schoenmakers and the possibility of Roughead’s return should free Gunston up for a more mobile role in 2017, making him one of the competition’s most dangerous forwards.
