Struggled for continuity early in the season due to suspension, but was a consistent performer throughout the second half of the year. Was thrown several run-with roles in the lead-up to the finals and, with the Hawks well off for attacking midfielders, the popular Bateman looks set to be given more of these roles towards the end of his career.

Draft history: 1999 National AFL Draft 4th round selection (Hawthorn) No. 48 overall on-traded by Collingwood to Essendon for Jonathon Robran and No. 40 (David Hille).
