The youngest player taken in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, the hard-running midfielder made his AFL debut just a month after his 18th birthday. It was the first of 11 appearances, including the last nine games. Averaged 14 disposals and won the best first-year player award. It was a significant achievement considering Shiels was still in Year 12 and usually trained just once a week with the Hawks, who are confident about him becoming a top-line player.

Draft history: 2008 NAB AFL Draft 2nd round selection (Hawthorn) No. 34 overall.
