The 2008 Norm Smith medallist came through a challenging year with his reputation intact. Shoulder surgery delayed his start to the pre-season and he missed three games from rounds 8-10 with a groin problem. Opposition teams made it more difficult for him to play his ‘defence coordinator’ role, but he returned to vintage form in the second half of the season, with a best-afield, 34-disposal, three-goal effort in the round 16 win over Collingwood being his standout performance. Finished sixth in the best and fairest.

Draft history: 2001 National AFL Draft priority selection (Hawthorn) No. 1 overall traded by Fremantle for Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin.
