After winning the Hawks’ most improved player award and being an emergency for the 2008 Grand Final, the defender generally capitalised on his opportunities last season. In the absence of injured key backmen Stephen Gilham and Trent Croad, Murphy was thrown the challenge of playing on key forwards, although he often gave away a lot of size to opponents. Was at his best early and remained one of the few constants in the back half.
