The Box Hill Hawks suffered their fourth loss of the season on Saturday against a strong Footscray outfit.

Despite the result, Hawthorn-listed players Josh Morris and Josh Ward were among those who produced strong performances throughout the day.

Morris was handy out of the back pocket, playing his role well and collecting 12 disposals, while Ward led the Hawks with eight tackles.

Hawthorn development coach Andy Otten has given his review of how each 13 listed Hawks faired in the clash.

Finn Maginness (24 disposals, 7 tackles, 5 clearances)

"Finn started on the wing for us and ran some really good patterns to try and get involved in the game. We moved him on ball in the second half, he looked really strong around the ball and was able to lay some big tackles and get his contest work going. He was one of our strongest performers for the day."

Josh Ward (19 disposals, 8 tackles, 4 marks)

"Young Wardy was another player who had multiple weeks off due to injury. But it was great to see him back. We started him on the wing to get him through the first half, and then the second half we unleashed him on ball, and he looked really solid for us as an inside mid. I think he'll improve his stoppage work as he gets back into it, he was able to lay quite a few tackles for us too, so his inside work was a strength of his this game."

Tom Phillips (14 disposals)

"Tommy played his first game back after seven or eight weeks since his ankle surgery, so fair to say he was fresh to start the game. He was playing on ball for us and looked really lively and then has the game went on, he started to fatigue. He probably run out of gas a little bit. But first game back, we're glad he got through unscathed. He'll look to keep building his fitness, and therefore his impact on the game."

Jack Saunders (14 disposals, 4 tackles)

"Saundo continues to impress in his development, playing mainly as a high forward and getting some doses on the wing as well. His speed is something that stands out for us, which we look for him to use each game. He had four tackles, which is a personal best for Jack. We were after him to lay some more tackles inside the forward 50, and he was able to produce that for us. He also had a few shots on goal, he just needs to finish his work, and that would be a cherry on top for Saundo."

Josh Morris (12 disposals, 4 marks)

"Tank was the 23rd player for us in the AFL, but he didn't get on unfortunately. We were really impressed with Tank and his mindset to be able to perform the next day for Box Hill. He started off a bit slow, like the whole team, but he had an excuse. His second half was really strong, he was our best player in the second half for us. He looked strong and aggressive back in defence, intercepting some balls and being a solid competitor back there. He's in some good form."

Kyle Hartigan (10 disposals)

"It was Kyle's first game back after a few games of AFL, and he was probably lacking a bit of energy. The power and strength he usually plays with was probably missing admittedly. He had a few free kicks against, which some where there, while others he was just a bit too strong, so he'll look to bounce back this week."

Emerson Jeka (1 goal, 10 disposals)

"Jeka had his first game back following a six-week layoff with injury and he performed really well. We were really happy with Jeka's game, especially the second half - he was able to take some big, contested marks, his work rate was high and he looked really lively for us. We're looking for him to just keep progressing after a big time away."

Jai Serong (10 disposals, 5 marks)

"We're really liking what Jai is producing. His work rate is super high, we had some big talls back in the team. His ability to work up and down the ground for us is a strength of his. He probably didn't have the impact he would've liked, but we were still happy with a lot of the patterns he was running and his ability to get involved in the game."

Fionn O’Hara (9 disposals)

"Fionn had his best game of the year so far for us. I think he's five games into his very young AFL career for us. We're really happy with what we're seeing. The speed of the game tends to suit him with his pace. He was able to win more of the footy for himself, which is a great sign. His progression each week has been an upward trajectory."

Denver Grainger-Barras (8 disposals, 6 marks)

"Denver's game, like the team, was off in the first quarter and a half. But the second half, similar to Josh Morris, he was able to assert himself in the game. He took multiple intercept marks for us, which is a great sign for Denver. When he's on and firing, his ability to take intercept marks from a man. We're looking for Denver to perform across four quarters, I think he's building nicely, it's not too far away."

Ned Long (8 disposals, 6 tackles)

"Longy was improving before he got injured and after a long absence, he just wasn't able to recapture that previous form. He was again just off the pace a little bit from being in rehab for so long. So we'll be looking for Longy to bounce back quickly and get back to what we know he's capable of."

Jackson Callow (6 disposals, 5 tackles)

"Callow admittedly had one of his poorest games of the year. He couldn't get involved in the first half, when he played as a forward. So we put him in the ruck in the second half, he had a slight injury as well, so he wasn't able to produce his best game. But he'll get back on the training track, write that game off and perform next week."

Max Ramsden (1 goal, 5 disposals)

"Rama made his debut for us. He is a tall, super athletic and super raw player and we're really excited about the possibilities we have with Maxy. He was able to kick a goal on debut as well. It's going to be a development year for Max and we know he's going to develop really nicely. We're just asking for him to keep competing and learning the craft, coming in mid-year would be tough for any player."
