Sam Mitchell says his side struggled to keep up with Richmond at both ends of the field in its 61-point loss at the MCG on Sunday.

Speaking post-game, Mitchell acknowledged that the Tigers were too strong across several domains.

“We couldn’t handle their forward potency, and we couldn’t lock it in our frontend either,” Mitchell said.

“Just talking to the players straight after the game, I think there was a sense that today was a little bit of a step backwards.

“We just weren’t at our best, we didn’t perform well enough in enough areas to be competitive with a very good side.

“There’s a level of disappointment about today’s performance.”

Despite the scoreline, Mitchell said his side's effort in the last quarter was a pleasing aspect.

“There were a couple games earlier in the year where we weren’t as strong and competitive late in games,” he said.

“I’m glad that we continued to work hard and try to play the right way and continue to put in the effort required.”

In a shining light of the day, tagger Finn Maginness claimed another scalp, restricting star Tiger Shai Bolton to 13 disposals.

“There’s not too many positives that come out of today, but that was one,” Mitchell said.

“Bolton is a fantastic player – probably the most exciting player in the game at the moment – so for Finn to keep him to not many too possessions and only one shot at goal is a credit to him.”
