HAWTHORN has unveiled former Richmond captain Chris Newman as the latest addition to its coaching panel for 2016.

Newman, who retired at the end of this season, will join the club as a Development Coach.

The 33-year-old played 268 AFL matches in a career spanning 15 years at the top level, and captained the Tigers for four seasons.

Newman said he was excited to commence his new role.

“Obviously playing football for fifteen years – stepping into a new environment, a new club, meeting new people and (tackling) a different challenge is something I’m really looking forward to,” Newman said.

“I’ve been exposed a little bit to coaching, so I feel like the development side is a really good fit for me here, and I’m looking forward to working with the younger boys.

“Everyone sort of talks about Hawthorn as being the benchmark, not only on the field but off the field as well.

“It’s going to be a huge challenge.”

GM – Football Operations Chris Fagan said he believed Newman would be a fantastic acquisition for the three-time reigning premiers. 

"We are really excited to have Chris joining our club,” Fagan said. 

"Obviously he was a highly skilled and experienced player, and he has a genuine love and interest in coaching.

"He’s a humble person with great character, and is someone who really fits the mould of our football club.

"We believe he will be an excellent fit, and will have plenty of knowledge to pass on to our developing players.”

In another change to the Hawks’ coaching panel, Damian Carroll has been promoted to an assistant coaching role.
