Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson believes Adelaide will be determined to atone for their disappointing 2018.

Speaking on Friday, the four-time premiership coach said the side is prepared for a tough contest against the 2017 grand finalists.

But Clarkson was also quick to point out the positive summer that the Hawks had enjoyed.

"Our observation of them over the summer is that they've had a pretty good preparation," Clarkson said.

"We've got to be ready for that, but our boys have had a good preparation too.

"There is a lot of optimism around the first game of the year but this game is not going to be any more important than Round 2 or Round 3."
