The Hawthorn VFLW team has ended its pre-season campaign going down by 13 points to Casey at Casey Fields on Saturday.

Despite a quick start from the Hawks, the home side deemed to be too strong in the final term taking a late lead and sealing the win.

Hawthorn came out firing from the get-go, with Tayla Kearns continuing to show her strong hands, feeding it into the forward 50 to Clare O’Donnell, who then was able to convert, registering the first major of the game.

O’Donnell then went back-to-back with an impressive score running into goal. Only seconds later, Claire Dyett was able to get the third of the game, with the help of a strong clearance from Ebony Nixon out of the midfield.

Hawthorn’s first three goals all occurred within the first 10 minutes of the match, showing their momentum.

Rosie Dillon controlled the midfield with quick hands, with Coach Paddy Hill praising her efforts at quarter time.

The second term was a scrappy one, with lots of stoppages and ground ball pressure from the opposition. Despite the fast start from the Hawks, they were only able to score one more major for the rest of game, letting Casey take control in the second half.

During the third quarter Olivia Flanagan had two opportunities in front of goals, with the second attempt successful. Casey was quick to respond and brought the contest back to within two points heading into the final term.

In the end the Hawks were unable to match the pressure of Casey, with the opposition having five scoring opportunities and two goals in the last 15 minutes of the game.

Despite the loss, Assistant Coach Hayley Gregory was feeling positive with the hit-out.

"They probably worked harder to get at the footy first, but in the scheme of things, structurally we went okay and it was a good opportunity for a few girls to get out there and have a go.”

The Hawks will now look ahead to the season opener next Sunday 12 May at 11:30am against NT Thunder, where they will begin their premiership defending campaign.
