In his seventh year at the club, O’Brien had one of his strongest seasons to date playing an equal career-high 16 games and averaging nearly 13 disposals.

O’Brien began his year at Box Hill, however two impressive outings saw the swingman elevated to the senior side in Round 6.

The 25-year-old played his first 11 games at senior level in defence, but a move to the forward line in Round 18 contributed to the Hawks’ strong finish to the season.

O’Brien kicked all 12 goals for 2019 in the last five rounds, including a three-goal performance against Geelong and four goals against West Coast in Round 23.

The number 23’s strong finish to the year was rewarded with a contract extension that will see O’Brien remain at the club until the end of 2021.
