It was a tough day at the footy; the rain bucketed down on Victoria Park as the Hawks took on the second-placed Magpies.

Despite lining up against an AFLW-stacked Collingwood outfit, the young Hawks didn’t shy away from the challenge, pressuring the Pies throughout with unrelenting attack on the football.

Q1:

The Pies were first to hit the scoreboard, booting back-to-back majors through Demi Hallett and Cahlia Haslam early in the first term.

In need of a momentum breaker, debutant Katie Angelis had the reply, snapping through traffic for her first goal in the brown and gold, narrowing the margin to eight points at the first break.

Q2:

Goals were hard to come by amid the soggy conditions, as evidenced by a goalless second term by both sides.

The Hawks continued to give themselves opportunities however, locking it inside their forward half with some solid intercept marks and run-down tackles.

Emily Gilder and Taya both forced turnovers with gutsy chase downs, while ruck Kate Dudley was impenetrable against her former side, denying many Collingwood forward forays and dominating the intercept possession count.

Q3: 

The scoring deadlock was broken by the black and white in the third term, as AFLW-listed Abbi Moloney kicked truly to extend her side’s margin out to 16 points.

Dudley and Lauren Szigeti continued to work hard, each taking an important defensive mark, while Maddie Shaw’s deft touch on the line saved a certain Collingwood goal.

Meg Hutchins’ ever-calm presence was critical in the backline, as the acting captain forced another turnover with a ripping run-down tackle.

Q4: 

With the clock running down, the Hawks were in desperate need of something special to help claw back the 16-point three-quarter time margin.

As she so often does, Hutchins provided the moment of the match. Capitalising on a free kick from deep in the pocket, Hutchins sent through a pinpoint set shot from the tightest of angles, igniting the crowd and providing her team with some much-needed spark.

Though momentum was on their side, unfortunately time was not – the siren sounded locking in a 15-point victory for the home side.

Nevertheless, it was a strong defensive showing from a comparatively inexperienced Hawks’ line up, against a Pies outfit that looks set to challenge deep into the season.
