It was another close game for the Hawthorn VFLW team on Saturday, with the girls falling agonisingly short in a nail-biting game against Casey Demons at Box Hill.

It was perfect conditions for footy, and the game proved to be aggressive and high scoring.

Sadly the Hawks went down by 13 points with the Dees proving too strong throughout the second and third quarters.

Despite the loss, there were many strong performances all over the ground, and Coach Bec Goddard was happy to name her picks for best on the day.

Key area on the improve, now onto the next one

Emily Gilder

“Best game of the year, really. Gilder just looked fantastic across the field and had a really winning intent today. I thought she was really ruthless. She flew into contests, and was also really attacking. It was one of her best games for us.”

Tamara Luke

“She’s really reliable up forward. She was at every contest, and sometimes it was even two on one, especially in the last quarter. She still either marked it or brought it to the spot we needed for the little people so another really great game from Tam.”

Olivia Flanagan

“That was Livvy’s best game this year. She came in with her Ronda Rousey hair and just looked ready for the fight. Really clean with her skills, ran at the footy, and followed the coaching instructions that we gave her during the week. She had a great game.”

Chloe Bain

“She’s a bit of an enigma! We didn’t know to play her forward, defence, or if she was a ruck. This week she rolled through the middle to assist Kate Dudley and she was really reliable in defence. She had a booming kick when required.”

Kristy Stratton

“What an impact Stratts made in her first game! The first goal she kicked was in the first three minutes of the game and that’s the way to enter a team. We’re so happy to have her back and she looked like she really enjoyed her footy today.”

Izzy Khoury

“She’s just a dominant little midfielder, and it’s a shame that it’s her last game for us. Because of the rules of the competition, we can only play her in three games before finals. She’s been a really important part of our team over the last three weeks - she finds the footy, she’s not flashy with it, she follows instructions, and she wants to be the best. We’re really excited about her future.”
