Box Hill got back on the winner’s list on Sunday in Wonthaggi with a 33-point win over Casey.

Four AFLW-listed Hawks tasted victory, with Janet Baird, Laura Elliott, Emily Everist and Sophie Locke all lining up in the brown and gold.

Box Hill Coach Cherie O’Neill was pleased with the team’s performance but outlined there was still room for improvement.

“I reckon we played three really solid quarters of football which we really wanted to concentrate on today,” O’Neill said.

“We were just a little bit patchy in that last quarter but overall, they did really well today and played our brand of footy.”

AFLW-listed Hawks

Janet Baird (14 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles)

“We had her down forward today. It was a bit of a different role for her just to provide a bit of pressure in our forward line and create something. It looked like she had a good time out there.”

Laura Elliott (14 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles)

“Laura played through the centre which was a new role for her. She reads the ball really well. You can tell she’s been brought up watching football and playing football. She’s a good natural player and just gives her all.”

Emily Everist (9 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles)

“We kept Emily down in the back line just to help her keep working on her one-on-one craft. She brings something to the game every week and she’s really competitive.”

Sophie Locke (2 goals, 9 disposals)

“Sophie rotated through the midfield and forward line today. She always brings the pressure and brings that X-factor. It was great to see her leading up in the forward line with a bit of pace.”

VFLW-listed Hawks

Maddie Boyd (1 goal, 22 disposals, 10 hit-outs, 8 marks)

“I’ve got to give a shout-out to Boydy who was back for us this week. She’s so solid, we’ve missed her the past few weeks. She always presents well and gives her all. She creates a contest out of nothing so we’re really happy to have her back.”

Jordan Mifsud (19 disposals, 9 tackles, 3 marks)

“Jordy through the midfield just quietly goes about her business. She brings a lot of pressure and brought some good pressure especially in the forward line today.”

Akayla Peterson (18 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 marks)

“Akayla was fantastic on the wing. She missed the game last week so it was good to see her back in. She found that good balance of aggression in her offensive and defensive game so it was good to see her playing again.”

Box Hill will be hoping to secure back-to-back wins and get its season back on track when it travels to Preston City Oval to face Darebin on Saturday at 10.30am.

O’Neill said the main focus for the team would be seeing out the full four quarters of the game.

“We’ll approach this game similar to how we approached the game against Casey,” she said.

“We’re really trying to work on playing four good quarters of footy and I think we’ve still got a bit to go.

“We’re just trying to build on the brand that we want to play and how we want to be seen.

“We’re playing a solid team again so it’s a good opportunity to just go out there and play footy.”
