Hawthorn midfielder Will Day is now closing on a return within two to three months as he progresses through his recovery from a stress fracture in his foot.

According to High Performance Manager Peter Burge, the 23-year-old is hitting excellent strength markers and will soon begin working on the AlterG treadmill.

Ahead of Hawthorn's Sir Doug Nicholls Round match against Brisbane, two players have been added to the injury list, with Noah Mraz suffering a concussion and Matt Hill sustaining an ankle injury in Box Hill's 84-point win over Gold Coast.

Burge also provided updates on forward duo Luke Breust and Mitch Lewis in this week's injury update.

Luke Breust - back (1-2 weeks)

"He's still sore. He's had a little bit of progression from last week. He's been riding a bike and today he went outside and walked some laps. We expected it was going to be sore for a little while but it should hopefully pick up next week and we can get him moving at the start of the week. We'll make a reassessment at the end of next week as to his availability which means he's not playing this weekend. It's still a one to two week proposition at this stage but we're hoping for some improvement over the next couple of days."

Noah Mraz - concussion (1-2 weeks)

"He had a concussion episode in the VFL game. He was withdrawn from the game after the incident. He will now follow the standard protocols with our doc Liam West. It's minimum 12 days so we've listed him as one to two weeks but we're hoping it's just one week missed. He's feeling really good, he did some running today so at this stage, he's tracking well. He's played quite a bit of football already which is fantastic for a first-year player and he needs to obviously first recover from the concussion but also generally just get a short break and we can reload and go again."

Matt Hill - ankle (2-3 weeks)

"He had an incident in the game on the weekend at the Gold Coast. He actually has a very small syndesmosis ankle sprain which is different to a typical lateral ankle sprain. There's all sorts of different grades of these, they can be severe or they can be very minor and he's on the minor end so we're expecting that to be two weeks, potentially three weeks. But at this stage, he's in a boot just for a couple of days to absolutely give it some stabilisation and let it settle but we expect it will turn around quite quickly. Like Noah, he's played some football in his first year at the club, VFL football as an AFL-listed player, so a little rest generally will be good for him. We'll just rehab the ankle accordingly and go again when he's ready."

Mitch Lewis - knee (5 weeks)

“Mitch Lewis was going really well until recently. We’ve just been dealing with a calf niggle which has just set him back a week or two. He’s started running again this week. But as with any long-term injury, sometimes you face these little bumps along the way when his training load has been increasing, which we were doing. The knee itself is fantastic, his strength is really good, he’s put a fair bit of work in and has a lot of work behind him. We’ve just hit a little speed bump in the road, which is just going to delay his return more than likely to post-bye, so we’ve listed that as five weeks from now. But we’re expecting he’ll progress back into training over the next week, and then we can progress from there into his return to play.”

Will Day - foot (2-3 months)

"He's going really well and has progressed into some stairwalking, doing a lot of reps and his strength work in the gym is just fantastic at the moment. Some of the markers that he's hit in the last week or two have been excellent. What that's telling us is that he's ready to start running very soon so we'll be running on the AlterG treadmill in the next two weeks and beyond that, we'll be back outside building his conditioning. In terms of the timeline, we've made it two to three months, which is still quite broad, but once we get back running and have that next scan which is a couple of weeks away, we'll be more exact with which round he's going to return which means he's going to play some games at the end of this season. We'll have more of a definitive update in the next couple of weeks on that but right now, his timeline is two to three months still and he's progressing really well."
