Hawthorn's reigning best and fairest winner Will Day is on track to return to the field next month.

It comes after the 22-year-old received some positive news following a scan on his foot on Tuesday morning, enabling the medical team to outline a timeline for his return to play.

Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge said Round 7 would be the target for his return.

"Today he had a bone scan that absolutely gave us confirmation that the healing is excellent," Burge said.

"We can now progress Will to running outside at full body weight on grass, then into conditioning before resuming to football training with an aim for match play at Round 7.

"That starts the process of re-conditioning, which we already started doing with the Alter G treadmill over the last two weeks."

Meanwhile, second-year Hawk Bailey Macdonald is set to return via the VFL when Box Hill takes on Casey Demons in its season opener this weekend.

Macdonald has been on the sidelines since February after suffering bone stress in his femur.

Burge said the youngster had progressed significantly across the past fortnight to put him in a strong position heading into the weekend.

"Bailey has had two good weeks of training and he'll play some minutes this weekend in the VFL," Burge added.

"It's great to have him back and training really well, bringing his energy to the group, so we're just looking forward to seeing him play."

In some further good news, Chad Wingard has resumed training with the main group for the first time since injuring his achilles in August last year.

"Chad did two football drills today with the main group so he is starting his progression now in football training, that will progress very slowly given he hasn't done any football training for quite a long time," Burge said.

"We're sticking with that Round 8 return but we'll progress his football training over the next couple of weeks."
