HAWTHORN star and Alzheimer’s Australia ambassador Sam Mitchell will take part in the Memory Walk and Jog on the Mornington Peninsula on Sunday.

The Memory Walk and Jog is an event which raises funds and awareness to enable Alzheimer’s Australia to continue to provide much-needed support services, education and social research.

Mitchell has been an ambassador for a number of years.

“The reason that I got involved couple of years ago, is because my wife’s mother (Valda) passed away from Alzheimer’s about two and a half years ago,” he told ABC Radio.

“I didn’t have much idea about it (Alzheimer’s)… but she’d only been diagnosed a couple of years before, which was right when we were having children and it was a very, very difficult period.

“I’ve learned more and more about Alzheimer’s since I’ve been involved as an ambassador.

“Certainly there’s a component where exercise and brain function are related.”

Mitchell said he hoped people would turn out in numbers to support the event.

“I think what the Memory Walk is about is about remembering our loved ones who are perhaps not with us, or to be there as support for people who are still living with Alzheimer’s,” he said.”

“That’s certainly why myself and a couple of family members will be doing it… as a memory for Valda.”
